Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about LASIK vision correction surgery:

Does LASIK hurt?

Because the cornea is numbed with “eye drop” anesthesia, our LASIK patients report little, if any, discomfort both during and after the procedure. Some may feel the sensation of having worn contact lenses too long, but rarely is the discomfort greater than that.

How long does the procedure take?

The procedure usually takes no more than 10 minutes to perform when both eyes are done sequentially.

When will I be able to see after the procedure?

Results vary from patient to patient, but 98 percent achieve driving vision by the very next morning. Full visual results are usually realized within one day to four weeks.

Will I have 20/20 vision?

We hope so, but as with any vision correction option, there is no guarantee that you will have perfect vision or that you will not need distance or reading glasses again. Dr. Norden should tell you during the screening process what to expect. Virtually everyone experiences improved vision, and more than 99 percent of patients see well enough to pass a driver’s test without corrective lenses.

Will the results be permanent?

In the many years LASIK has been performed, the correction has been permanent. Based on our knowledge of the cornea, there is no reason to believe that there would be any changes.

What problems may occur?

Serious problems are quite rare; minor problems are easily managed. Today’s improved custom software has significantly reduced the frequency of even minor difficulties.

Questions to ask your laser eye surgeon when considering LASIK surgery, Intacs, or other cornea and refractive procedures:

Do you specialize in refractive surgery exclusively? Are you a cornea specialist?

Dr. Richard Norden is the ONLY Cornea Specialist performing LASIK surgery in New Jersey whose practice is limited to refractive surgery. Visit Dr. Norden, the area’s leading laser eye surgeon, to learn whether you might be a LASIK candidate.

How many procedures have you performed?

Dr. Norden has performed well over 20,000 cornea and refractive procedures at his New Jersey LASIK surgery center, including LASIK surgery, monovision, and Intacs. Complications occur at a significantly higher rate in a doctor’s first 300 to 400 procedures, and much more frequently in their first 100. After 20,000 cornea and refractive procedures, the percentage of complications is reduced to an absolute minimum. We recommend choosing a laser eye surgeon who has performed a large number of procedures.

Can you give me your outcome data on at least 50 patients that have the same prescription as I do?

Yes, Dr. Norden has a unique outcome analysis software program that allows you to compare results with patients with your prescription.

Does your laser eye surgeon perform Custom LASIK™?

Dr. Norden is the premier laser eye surgeon in Ridgewood, New Jersey for patients who demand top-quality care. Dr. Norden pioneered and trademarked the LASIK surgery technique known as Custom LASIK™. Eyes come in all shapes and sizes. With the Moria Microkeratome (the most advanced device available for creating the flap during LASIK surgery), Dr. Norden customizes the placement of the hinge to optimize any astigmatism treatment that might be necessary.
