LASIK is an acronym for Laser Assisted In-Situ Keratomileusis. The popularity of LASIK has grown exponentially since its FDA approval in 1998 and it is now the number one elective procedure in the United States. LASIK eliminates or reduces the need for glasses or contact lenses for patients with refractive error, including myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and astigmatism.
Virtually everyone who wears glasses or contact lenses is a LASIK candidate. There are, however, a few exceptions. At Norden Laser Eye, we offer free consultations for LASIK in our Bergen County office to determine if you are a candidate. During this consultation, we will explain the procedure in greater detail, and inform you of the many benefits and few risks of LASIK surgery.
During LASIK, a small protective flap is created in the cornea of the eye.

The flap is lifted, and the excimer laser gently sculpts the corneal tissue so that images will focus correctly on your retina.

The flap is replaced, and by the next morning there is enormous visual improvement.

At Norden Laser Eye in Ridgewood (Bergen County), we have performed LASIK for thousands of satisfied patients. All of our LASIK patients have experienced enormous improvement in their "naked eye" vision. The vast majority of our patients at Norden Laser Eye are able to see 20/20 or better, and virtually all can drive a car legally - without correction - in all 50 states.
LASIK has been performed around the world for more than 20 years and over 15 million people have undergone LASIK. No one has ever gone blind after LASIK, even though it remains a theoretical risk.
LASIK - Questions & Answers
In the many years that LASIK has been studied, the correction has been permanent. Based upon our knowledge of the cornea, no one anticipates that the cornea will change at a later date.
The LASIK procedure lasts approximately five minutes per eye and is entirely painless. It is performed with topical anesthetic numbing eye drops. Most patients feel absolutely nothing after the procedure; a percentage say they feel as if they had worn their contact lenses too long and have a gritty, grainy feeling until the next morning.
Results vary from patient to patient, but most patients at Norden Laser Eye are able to see well enough to drive the day after LASIK, with continued improvement over the next few days.
Yes. LASIK was FDA approved in 1998.
