Recovery after LASIK Surgery
Once you have taken the initiative and gone through with your LASIK procedure you will need to take a few simple steps to ensure adequate recovery. Although LASIK seems like a simple out-patient procedure, it is still a surgery and your body needs to recover for all to heal smoothly. Follow these simple guidelines during your LASIK recovery.
Same Day
The day of your LASIK procedure you will need someone else to drive you home. Make sure you keep the sunglasses that are provided to you on at all times when you are outside. The first step in LASIK recovery is to rest your eyes. When you get home from your surgery take a nap and keep your plastic shields on for the first two to four hours. When you remove the plastic shields per your doctor’s instructions, you should begin lubricating your eyes with the prescribed eye drops. It is important to keep your eyes moist and comfortable during the LASIK recovery process. Do not rub, squeeze, or touch your eyes after the LASIK procedure. Avoid reading, computer use, strenuous activity, and TV during the first 24 hours of recovery.
The Next Day
Generally, you will go back to the doctor’s office the next day. During that visit your LASIK surgeon will quickly check your vision and evaluate your healing. After the visit it is important to continue to avoid strenuous activity and avoid getting dirt or debris in your eyes. Do not wear make-up or use any lotions or creams near your eyes for seven days. Continue to use your lubricating drops as prescribed.
After a Week
Once a week has passed you can resume exercise. However, you should wear protective eye gear and avoid rubbing or touching your eyes. Additionally, before you begin wearing eye make-up or using any creams or lotions you should consult with the doctor who performed your LASIK procedure.
